poster smallDacorum Careers Fair – Wednesday 24th October 2018

Shendish Manor Hotel, London Road, Apsley, HP3 0AA

About this event:

This interactive event brings students from the nine mainstream Dacorum schools, in direct contact with employers and training providers in one venue with the overall aim of:

  • Helping young people gain meaningful encounters with employers
  • Teaching young people about a variety of local jobs and industries
  • Educating students about the varied routes into work
  • Enabling teachers and school staff to interact and network with employers

Employer/Exhibitor guidelines:

The event targets students in Y11 and Y12 (ages 15-17)

We encourage you to bring along employees who will enjoy getting out from behind the stand, engaging with the young people, and talking to Teachers and Careers Leads too

Where at all possible, please have an interactive activity on your stand - please inform us if you need power or have any other requirements for your stand

We would like Employers/Exhibitors to please talk about the sector your company represents as well as your specific company – this helps young people to understand the breadth of jobs both within your company and the sector as a whole, e.g. the building sector doesn’t just employ building/manual roles, they also employ marketeers, accountants, IT staff, etc., etc.

Employers/Exhibitors are asked for a £25 suggested contribution to the fair – Shendish Manor have kindly donated their venue free of charge for the Fair, the nominal charge for stands enables us to provide refreshments for Employers throughout the day as well as subsidising the marketing and promotional materials for the event

The Organisers

This event is led by the team of Enterprise Advisers who support the participating Dacorum schools. An Enterprise Adviser is a business volunteer who supports an individual school to achieve the Gatsby Benchmarks which, in turn, help develop a school’s overall careers programme.  The Enterprise Adviser Network is a national programme owned by The Careers and Enterprise Company, which in Hertfordshire is managed jointly by Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and YC Hertfordshire.   For more information see here https://bit.ly/2yPmPRI.  This is the first event of its kind created by Enterprise Advisers.  This event is supported by Connect Dacorum and Dacorum Borough Council.

We are currently sorting out the booking link, size of area available, and finer details and as soon as I have that I will update you. If you would like to book a stand please let me have the details of who will be the main contact (including email and telephone number), what industry area your company is in, what types of roles you would be looking for, how many people would be coming from your organisation (maximum 2).

epson 1 smallWe had a fabulous Cream Tea and Networking event at Shendish Manor Hotel on Wednesday 13th June and the weather was glorious for us.

The topic was on Volunteering and our guest speakers were Stuart Chalmers, HR Manager from Epson and Charlotte Hendrey, Communications Officer from Sunnyside Rural Trust.

First up to speak was Stuart who talked about the ethos at Epson and why it is so important to them as employers to look after their staff, and a part of that is giving them time in the working day to volunteer for a charity or community organisation.  They would like to encourage more staff to volunteer and are looking at ways to do this.  Working with Connect Dacorum to highlight any opportunities available.

Next was Charlotte who talked about the great work that Sunnyside Rural Trust do in offering people with learning difficulties training and work skills with plants, vegetables and fruit and even chickens.  They are always happy to support individual volunteers or team challenges to come and spend time with them.

As with any team challenge opportunity, companies who are sending a team of people to volunteer should also be prepared to have a budget which would be spent on buying the materials needed to do the job - whether it is painting or building, or even revamping.  Individual volunteering opportunites may not need a budget depending on the activity the volunteer is doing.  Connect Dacorum can work with companies to find either team challenges or indivudal opportunities so do let me know if you are interested.  Charities can also let me know if you have any opportunities available which I can then post out to our contacts.

After the presentations Cindy talked about the opportunities coming up with regards to the Employability Days on the 26th June and 16th July, and also the search for new Business mentors (Dragons) for the next Dragons Apprentice Challenge.

Shendish then served up delicious finger sandwiches and scones with jam and clotted cream while guests were able to network.

Our next networking event is on Thursday 30th August from 12 noon to 2pm at The Old Town Hall in Hemel Hempstead and you can book through the link here.  Hope to see you all there.
